  1. Coral generally grows in warm waters, and during prehistoric times, Michigan was warm enough for coral to grow there.  Parts of Michigan were covered by an ancient sea.  The coral reef that existed in the northern part of the Lower Peninsula has turned to stone that is called Petoskey stone.
